In ancient times the city of Cambridgeshire was located on the Isle of Ely, an elevated point within several miles of the wetland of Finland. Gradually the impassable zone was conquered by means of canals and air pumps and then by diesel engines. The name Ely comes from eels, and for centuries this creature was the backbone of the economy and food. There is even a World Eel Throwing Competition in the beautiful Ely River in May. Ely's glory is the cathedral, adorned with a 14th-century octagonal tower that is out of proportion to medieval architecture. In the 17th century, Oliver Cromwell owned property in Ely, and the house was preserved in a style that King Protector himself would have observed. An intoxicating blend of Romanesque and Decorated Gothic Architecture, Ely's inspiring church was founded in 1080 and was completed in the late 14th century.

This monument has its greatest feature because of the tragedy. In 1322 when the magnificent Lady Chapel was built, the Norman central tower collapsed. The transformation was truly unusual: the Octagon is an empty Gothic ornate tower and the work of medieval architects. There is a lamp with eight inner whales that support the amazing light of the fans. One of the many facts that turn head over heels about this building is that the wooden structure that supports the Octagon will not be built today because there are no trees big enough! The Octagon is an important place to see, but it is also just the beginning of a journey that should include Lady Chapel, with spellbinding vaulting, window tracery and rows of highly decorated ogees depicting Mary's life.
